The Crown of Crucis has the most unusual name of any pub or hotel in the country.

It is at Ampney Crucis, which is just a couple of miles from Cirencester and therefore ideally placed for exploring the Cotswold and Roman remains.

I’ve been here a number of times over the years and always felt it should be better.

I stayed here recently, the place has 25 rooms, and my room overlooked one of the most beautiful streams in the Cotswolds.

But the double room was rather small and have a look at what Australian guests said on TripAdvisor. They got it spot on. The working arrangements were doubtful and a little scary.

The food is just average but I have to say the staff were a delight – friendly and competent and as the Australian said with a little more vision and attention to detail the Crown could be transformed into something really worthwhile.
