Welcome to another Audi model, the A1 Citycarver. Not too sure where the name came from but basically you’ve got a jacked-up version of the A1 Sportback with added muscle, and being an Audi you know you’ve got a winner on your hands.
Audi designed a car which they said would be ideal in an urban environment and not to rough about in the countryside or on the tracks. But it has a bit more ground clearance anyway than the basic A1 and it looks a bit tougher. Prices start at around £22,000.
It is available with the 1.0-litre (30 TFSI) and 1.5-litre (35 TFSI) petrol engines and 50 miles to the gallon is normal and it will fit in the small hatch or compact crossover category which Brits are in love with at the moment.
The three-cylinder turbocharged TFSI is reckoned to be one of the best small engines on sale at the moment and a delight to drive on either short runs or cruising up and down the motorway.
The 1.0 TFSI produces 116PS and gives you bags lots of pull in low gears and the six-speed manual transmission is standard.
And there is the seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic automatic available which is magnificent.
Ride quality is excellent with a stiffer suspension and while it is still on the firm side, it is still comfortable – probably helped by the deeper profile tyres.
The 50mm boost in ride height makes it easier to get in and out of the car and as a result visibility is much improved, with the higher seating position helping too.
Compared to the standard A1 in Sport spec, the Citycarver costs an extra £1,400 and adds larger 17-inch wheels, and an LED interior light pack plus an exterior trim. All cars also get LED lights front and rear, front sports seats and air conditioning, plus that digital instrument cluster and 8.8-inch infotainment display.
The 30 TFSI starts at £22,040 and increases to £23,508 for the S tronic automatic and the experts will tell you that while it is quite expensive compared to its rivals it is still one of the best small cars on the roads today.
The interior has much the same cockpit as the A1 and customers can also add the Technology Pack (£1,695), which brings sat-nav, wireless phone charging and Audi’s larger cockpit dials. The Plus Pack is £695 and boasts privacy glass and dual-zone climate control, while the Comfort and Sound Pack (£1,150) gives you an excellent Bang and Olufsen stereo, parking system plus and heated seats.
The steering gives you bags of confidence and there is plenty of grip helped by the front wheel drive, The gearbox is tight and there are four drive modes for your to play around with.
With you almost guaranteed to 50 mpg you have a top speed of 123mph and 0-60mph in under 10 seconds. The top price model with all the kit sets you back £28,000. But the Citycarver only needs servicing every two years or 19,000 miles and there is the Audi three year or 60,000 mile guarantee.
The rewards of Audi ownership can now be reaped even more easily thanks to a new three year Fixed Price Car Insurance policy offered by Audi Financial Services (UK). The new proposition, which is available for new and used car customers, is a first for a premium motor manufacturer. It not only facilitates budgeting by eliminating the possibility of any unforeseen premium fluctuations but also liberates time that would otherwise be invested by customers in shopping around for renewal deals.
Although the premium can be fixed for up to three years, barring any specific changes in circumstances, customers are not tied into the new policy for the full term. Cover runs in 12-month increments, and renewal notices are issued at each interval confirming the fixed price for the next year – customers who no longer want to take up the cover can simply inform Audi Car Insurance before the next renewal takes place.
The new three year fixed price commitment is also backed up by other advantages that already form part of the Audi Financial Services (UK) insurance offer, including the guaranteed use of Audi-approved repairers and the use of genuine Audi parts or paint in the event of a claim or repair. An uninsured driver promise also protects customers’ no claims discount and excess if they are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver.
